文章摘要

Appraisal Theory, an extension of interpersonal function in Systemic Functional Linguistics, consists of attitude, engagement, and graduation subsystems. The graduation system, with its force and focus subsystems, is crucial for analyzing interpersonal resources in discourse. In “Nettles”, The author Munro reveals to readers the inner struggles of a middle-aged woman, her contradictions in facing family and self-worth realization, her craving for a beautiful love, and finally understanding the true meaning of love. This paper explores the graduation resources in Alice Munro's "Nettles" based on this system. It analyzes the emotional discourse of characters, aiming to understand their inner emotions and the story's connotations, and offers reference for future studies of Munro's and other literary works.
