One of the most important topics in the trend of western learning in the late Qing Dynasty was the eastward expansion of western medicine, and one of the most important ways to introduce western medicine was the compilation of western medical books. As the first book on surgical procedures imported into China, Manual of Operation Surgery reflects the initial appearance of Western medical surgery when it was introduced into China, and it also shows the efforts made by the medical missionaries who came to China to localize it in the process of compilation. At the same time, the gradual development of Western medical and surgical sciences in China and the public's emotional turn towards Western medical and surgical sciences are, at a deeper level, the Chinese people's choice between traditional ethics and life support, which implies their own interpretation and practice of the way of life.
