this study focuses on the discourse and word choice of the protagonists in the classic American TV series Friends to explore the relationship between language variation and social identity. Through the collection of 33 valid questionnaires and the analysis of the play-based corpus, the research finds that Rachel’s vocabulary tends to fashion and high-end social fields, while Joey focuses on performance fields, reflecting the influence of different social identities on vocabulary choice. In different scenes, there are differences in the language speed, discourse marks and grammatical structure of the characters. For example, the language characteristics of the business gathering and the cafe scene are different, and the language styles of Ross in the academic and family scenes are different, and these language variants have short-term effects on her social identity strengthening and interpersonal interaction. Although the study has limitations such as small sample size, possible errors in corpus construction and analysis, and bias in participants, it provides directions for subsequent studies, such as exploring long-term effects and conducting cross-genre and cross-cultural comparative studies, which will help in-depth understanding of the relationship between language and social identity in media studies.
