In the Les années, Ernaux creates a “Checklist” writing style. This kind of “Checklist” writing is a comprehensive list of important matters, behaviors, or a number of events in a specific order. Its content comes from the most common daily life, personal preferences and inner thoughts, etc., while the form is manifested as a kind of fragmented writing, with no complete cause and effect, no coherent storyline, and no specific characters, but this writing method is precisely the most appropriate form of writing fragmented memories. Due to the unusual content and form, the connotation of the text is more obscure, and the idea of the text is more implicit. There are many pauses in the book, which prolongs the reader's thinking time while reading, leaves the reader with a huge space for imagination, and deepens the reader's understanding and resonance.
