文章摘要
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO), social media use, and self-esteem among college students. The methods involved assessing a total of 750 students from a university in Guangdong using the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOS), the Social Network Sites Intensity Scale (SNSIS), and the Self-Esteem Scale (SES). The results showed that urban students scored higher on both the FoMOS and SNSIS compared to rural students (both P < 0.05). Regression analysis indicated that, after controlling for residence and grade, the interaction between social media use and self-esteem negatively predicted FoMO (β = -0.02). Simple slope analysis revealed that individuals with high self-esteem (B = 0.22) could mitigate the FoMO associated with social media use, whereas individuals with low self-esteem (B = 0.38) experienced increased FoMO. In conclusion, self-esteem moderates the relationship between social media use and FoMO.
